A plug-in warming plate that melts a jar candle from the bottom, with no flame and no smoke. Set the candle on the plate, switch it on, and the scent fills the room as the wax softens. It turns itself off after eight hours.
Made by Candle Warmers Etc. in Draper, Utah, for 4 to 12 oz jar candles, so it suits our 9 oz amber jar and most other jar candles. This is the simplest way to use a candle without lighting it, and the easiest one to tuck into a gift.

Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each burn. On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the jar (about 2 to 3 hours) so it does not tunnel.
Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time, on a heat-safe surface, away from drafts, pets and children. Stop when about 1/2 inch of wax remains.
